Nine months and growing!

Wow it's been a while. Brooke is almost 10 months old...and growing every day. Here are Brooke's 9 month stats:

Weight: 19 lbs. 2 oz.  57%
Height: 27.5 inches.   49%

Dr. E says she is on the small side but we think she is prefect. The week before Brooke's Well Baby Check-up she got the unpleasant experience of Roseola...For those who are not familiar with it here is the run down:


Roseola is an acute disease of infants and young children in which a high fever and skin rash occur.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

The disease is common in children ages 3 months to 4 years, and most common in those ages 6 months to 1 year. It is caused by a virus called human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), although similar syndromes are possible with other viruses.
Roseola occurs throughout the year. The time between becoming infected and the beginning of symptoms (incubation period) is 5 to 15 days.

Symptoms

The child may have a runny nose, sore throat, and eye redness.
A fever usually occurs before the rash appears. It lasts for 3 (sometimes up to 7) days. The fever may be as high as 105° Fahrenheit, and it generally responds well to acetaminophen (Tylenol).
Between the second and fourth day of the illness, the fever drops and a rash appears (often as the fever falls).

• The rash starts on the trunk and spreads to the limbs, neck, and face. The rash is pink or rose-colored, and has fairly small sores that are slightly raised.
• The rash lasts from a few hours to 2 - 3 days. It usually does not itch.

Other symptoms include:

• Irritability
• High fever that comes on quickly

Signs and tests

• Physical exam of rash
• Swollen lymph nodes on the neck (cervical nodes) or back of the scalp (occipital nodes)

Treatment

There is no specific treatment. The disease usually gets better without complications.
Take steps to control a fever with acetaminophen (Tylenol) and cool sponge baths. If convulsions occur, call your health care provider, or go to the closest emergency room.

Brooke's rash actually started on her neck and the sides of her face. After a week of the fever and nasty disposition both Mom and Dad were very sleep deprived. The following week I, Liz, got a cold and eventually passed it onto Brooke the next week. Brooke had the cold for over a week and we are still working on getting her back into a sleeping routine... which means Mom and Dad are still tired.

What Brooke is doing these days:

• Says Mama, Dada, Baba, Wawa
• Tries to whistle with her two bottom teeth..comes out like a ssss sound
• She only has her two bottom front teeth and no signs of anymore coming
• Crawls everywhere
• Climbs on top of boxes and scares us half to death.
• Walks with her bike...she loves walking and when you hold her hands she will take you all over the house.
• Loves to bounce and/or jump
• Loves eating big people food. Sometimes at dinner she will refuse to eat her "baby food" and so we usually end up feeding her from out plates. Some nights we don't even bother with her food because we know how picky she is getting.
• She prefers to feed herself...which usually means there is a big mess.
• She loves emptying her Grandma's Tupperware container cupboard all over the floor.
• She loves to play with her friend Hailey who is 2 months old. Brooke usually takes her socks off.
